Gun safety group endorses Andy Kim in NJ-3

A leading gun safety organization, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action, has endorsed Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) for re-election to a second term in Congress.

This is a repeat endorsement for Kim, who won the group’s backing in his successful 2018 campaign against two-term incumbent Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River).

This sets up a contrast race on guns in the highly competitive 3rd district of New Jersey.  The Republican candidate, former Hill International CEO David Richter, is a National Rifle Association member and was endorsed by the NRA during his primary campaign.

“Andy is a true leader on the issue of gun safety and keeping our communities safe,” said Karen Tillman, who heads the New Jersey Moms Demand Action chapter.  “He fought for real action on background checks on all gun sales, red flag laws, and closing loopholes during his first term in office, and I am proud to support him for reelection.”

Kim made gun safety one of his issues in his race against MacArthur, and supported expanded background checks on gun sales and closing the Charleston loophole that allowed people to skip background checks if they purchased their guns through a licensed dealer.

“When I first ran for Congress, I stood with Moms Demand Action and promised to do everything I could to keep our kids safe. Today, I’m proud to receive their endorsement for reelection,” said Kim. “As a dad to two young boys, I’m determined to create a better future for all of our children and that starts by supporting the incredible work of Moms Demand Action and gun safety advocates everywhere.”
